Beth

I get Algebra and no problem riding a bike but I cannot draw a straight line without a ruler---I am blown away by works of art. Julia is the only one in the family of 5 who has any ability in this area and i would love to get her out to see your work sometime - iknow she would Love It.

I know what you mean; a few years ago, I resolved to get more exercise by buying a used bike. It had been 30 years since I'd been on one. And yeah, it really IS like riding a bike! I think both your bike & algebra examples illustrate the way the brain works. Riding a bike is "muscle memory"; it uses 3 dimensional, visual, physical skills. Algebra uses a different brain space; verbal, analytical, rational. Your drawing (or any artist's skills) come from the first part, the visual area, and the muscle memory to make the motions to create what is visualized. When returning to something you haven't done in a while, yeah, it may take a little time to get back to where you used to be, but rest assured, it does come back.

Beth, I love this post! Thanks =) And cannot wait to see what you're making in your rediscovered love of dinnerware. You know how I feel about dishes but try not to let me collect more!

When I want to test whether or not I am really seeing, I take a walk and determine if I am seeing everything that I pass, or does it fade and as you say become another part of my "perception". Good seeing Beth.

I too dream of clay. These wonderful ideas, or at least they seem wonderful ideas at the time, come into my head and I can’t wait to execute them in clay. The problem is I still struggle with clay, trying to get it to do what I want and not what it wants. I have far better success in my own medium of fibers where I have command over what I want to accomplish.
Although Manolo Blahnik designs shoes, his quote could be applied to any artist’s medium: “About half my designs are controlled fantasy, 15 percent are total madness and the rest are bread – and – butter designs.”
Thought you would enjoy it.

Hi Beth!

I have been enjoying your writing and work, and now I have a bit more time. I would love to see you and have a good chat. If you have any time to come over for a visit that would be fun! There is no hurry....anytime you have the time!

Beth, I love your thought process/writing style. I dream about whatever is filling my consciousness be it clay, teaching, a new project. Early in my ceramic life, when I was an apprentice in the folk pottery factory, I would sleep walk to the pile of clay I thought I had to wedge for the night-in the middle of my bedroom! Fortunately I woke up before trying to wedge the pile of laundry on the floor.
